Turning reality 90 degrees around.

When it comes to places to be, it’s personal to everyone. Personally, I love New York. It’s a busy bustling and inspiring place for me to be and I love it when I get chance to spend any amount of time there. That’s why I keep an eye on things that are going on there and blog them here for you as often as I can.

So here’s one that is pure awesome… ness. Yes, awesomeness.

There’s a little coffee bar around the back of Grand Central Terminal that needs to be seen to be believed. It’s set up to look like a library/reading room but turned 90º on it’s side. So lights that hang from the ceiling become seats, and seats become lights that protrude from the wall above the bar.

It’s designed by the talented people at Nema Workshop, a New York based group of Architects, Designers and Thinkers. If you look at their very inspirational site you will see that they have worked on some amazing projects which make you realise that design, once again, is used to give a good feeling and add a little humour to the job in hand. Click on the picture above and you can go to their site to see for yourself just how inspiring it can be.

Everybody says… Brilliant.

New york city bike racks: the winner

winner_mahaffy_de-greeve1

If you were with us back a few months ago, you might have seen the post we did on the New York City bike rack competition that was held to design the bicycle racks to be placed around the city. Have a look if you want more background information, the link is here if you didn’t see it.

Well, the winner has finally been announced. It’s a design by Ian Mahaffy and Maarten De Greeve (Bettlelab) based in Copenhagen (in Denmark), they haev designed the very simple, but very elegant solution to the city’s problem. The hoop is a single piece anchored in the concrete and allowing great access to both sides. Class. In the usual manner, you can click the picture to read more about it at the official blog.

Everybody admires this piece of design a great deal, and wonders if it might happen here in Rotterdam, as the “Bent tubing” which we currently attach our bikes too is starting to look very old, very quickly. Might be interesting to see if it could be a competition run here too. Hmmmm. What would ours look like?

Bike racks: street art

Recently the city of New York held a competition to design the way in which the new Bike Racks look placed around the city, it was an interesting competition for a few reasons. The main reason it was interesting was it was open to all the design disciplines, with multi-disciplinary groups being encouraged.

The competition is still running but artist/musician, David Byrne (who is an avid cycler and was asked to join the judging jury) has produced some wonderful ideas of his own for the competition and the NYC Dept. of Transport has decided to put them into place for 364 days.

His designs is not one single piece replicated around the city, but each one being relevant to a particular area of town, for instance a Dollar sign for the one in Wall Street and a small dog for the one in the Village, etc.

Everybody likes New York city and everybody wants one of these outside our offices to put our bikes on.
