Portfolio: Padley and Venables Walls

P&V RECEPTION GRAPHIC 01

As part of the 100 year celebrations which have seen the entire offices redesigned and opened out to help develop the company and bring it up to date. As part of our ongoing work with Padley and Venables, we were asked to develop a wall graphic for this reception area to reflect the website designer previously by us. The size of this graphic is 5 metres X 1.75 m.

It was a simple thing for us to provide a strong graphic which shows the international nature of the company’s business and reminds every visitor of the scale of the operation. The other side of the wall shown here, is also covered with a graphic which helps communicate the company brand values to the staff on a daily basis.

The interior design and build was taken care of by Domino Commercial Interiors in Sheffield, with whom we worked to produce the graphic and get it in place.

We’ll update you with more on this project soon.

When perception meets visual accuracy

This got us thinking this morning. Only when we see a graphic demonstration of something do we actually see the truth. We love a good information graphic as much as the next man here at Everybody, but sometimes one is worth mentioning

Living in Europe we are used to seeing three dimensional representations of the globe from a “Eurocentric” perspective. This means that Africa is often wrapped around the bottom of the globe, which means we don’t really see just how huge the whole continent is. I mean, the Netherlands is small, the UK is also small, but Europe is huge right?

Nope.

If you look at the graphic we stumbled upon earlier today (don’t ask, we found it whilst looking for chocolate… again, don’t ask), which demonstrates just how epic in scale the continent of Africa is. Now, whilst I’m quite worldly wise, in terms of travel and Geography, it still surprised me. I know Africa is “big”, but it isn’t until you define “big” that you see just how much land mass it actually is.

The reason for this is that in the Northern Hemisphere we’re used to a specific projection of the globe. The “Mercator projection” is named after the Flemish Cartographer who produced it originally as a Nautical map, as it allowed rhumb lines to be shown as straight segments. (Click here for more on this – there’s real maths behind this so I’m not going into it!)

If you click on our (deliberately cryptic) small version of the graphic we refer to, you can see the full sized Graphic, produced by Kai Krause, and see for yourself, just how Africa could swallow, China, the United States, India and most of the European Countries and still have room for more!

Attention to detail in Letterpress

Everybody knows that Everybody loves letterpress as a printing method. Results are always interesting, and when combined with a fantastic image and used properly it becomes much amazing.

Recently whilst looking for something else, (as is always the case) we stumbled upon this amazing example of a letterpress poster. The designer, Cameron Moll, was inspired by a visit to the Colosseum in Rome to produce the poster you see a detail of above, it’s an example of what can happen when a designer or artist gets close to becoming obsessive. In this case it is pure inspiration.

You can click the image above to go to the website that he has produced to sell prints of the poster. There is a fantastic video of the production of the poster which will help you understand the process, and hopefully inspire you to make something as beautiful as this yourself.

Everybody says well done Cameron, this is a fantastically inspiring piece which we can’t keep ourselves from looking at over and over.

We’ve had a busy month so we will update the site with more stuff that has inspired us over the last few weeks whilst we’ve been knocking out the work!

UI tools, outside the computer screen.

There are still a few of us designers who prefer to draw our ideas out first – or at least scribble them, before we commit to PotatoShop or InDesign. Call us old school, but it is a skill that comes in useful. Everyday.

Anyway. To help us in particular there is a new little thingumajig by an American based supplier called UI STENCILS. UI being short for User Interface, and the stencil bit is, well, because they are stencils. Clever how that works, see.

The great ability to scribble out an idea to scale using elements from the system you are using is a really useful one, as drawing an icon from memory is a pain, especially when working alongside a pedant who points out that the lens on the camera you just drew is wider than the one on screen. This rends a huge hole in that conversation.

You can get a set of different ones from the website itself. And now a bunch of t-shirts are available with the symbols clearly marked.

Everybody says great idea people, wishes we had thought of it, and now needs a new iPad stencil cos we might need to develop something for that platform now! As usual you can click the image above and go to the website to see the other items they have.

Saturday: 404

Don’t worry, it isn’t a real 404!

Just a quick little post… Looking for something totally unrelated the other day and Everybody stumbled upon a reference to one of our favourite films of all time. The Big Lebowski.

The Illustrator, Dave Mott, has both a fantastic style and the set of illustrations in his portfolio blog show this in the best possible manner. He produced this as a concept for the HTML 404 error pages. As he says so many quotes from that film make great 404 pages. Click Walter to go and see his work!

Everybody loves the work of this Illustrator and hopes that you will spend a few minutes looking around his site. Maybe even commision him. Brilliant work Dave.
